STEM JIJ OOK? ik dacht al dat ik het rook.

MF-finderskeepersMF-1-original

A while ago I had an idea to get rid of all the second hand frames I have in my studio-at-home, combining it with “putting my work out there” off the screen.
The idea was to make little illustrations of whatever comes to mind (read: original artwork, not tweaked in the computer), frame it, and leave it somewhere in the streets of Rotterdam for someone to find under the name (and hashtag) Finders Keepers MF.
Or….some extra filling for the community garbage cans….(fingers crossed it won’t be the last. )

Yesterday, when having a shower (ideas pop up in showers, you know that), I thought of my somewhat “election stress” for the upcoming Dutch election Wednesday the 15th of March….and for whatever reason I thought of a song a teacher of mine sung when we had to walk back for thousands of hours (1h or so) to our dorms after a long day during our exchange in Germany (I was 14 years old).

She sang (with a conspiracy voice to each of us…):

Zweet jij ook?
Ik dacht al dat ik het rook.
Ik vraag je heel vertrouwelijk
Zweet jij ook?

(and we had to shout back…of course we did…):
JA, IK ZWEET!
VAN M’N OKSELS TOT M’N REET!
IK ZEG JE HEEL VERTROUWELIJK
JA, IK ZWEET!

Free translation (unfortunately not rhyme):
Do you sweat?
I already thought I’d smell it
I’m asking you very confidentially
Do you sweat?

YES, I SWEAT!
FROM MY ARM PITS TO MY ASS!
I TELL YOU VERY CONFIDENTIALLY
YES I SWEAT!

Well, this has always stayed with me as you can imagine, and just pops up in my head from time to time. This time, in the shower, I somehow made it into this:

Stem jij ook?
Ik dacht al dat ik het rook.
etc.

Free translation:
Do you vote?
I already thought I’d smell it.
etc.

The song kept in my head, I thought of the framed illustration idea again, I thought of March 15, and the combination was made.

Hopefully if someone finds it and decides to keep it and unwrap they will share it on social media with  #finderskeepersMF @madamefourmilion. Won’t that be cool? Free gift versus free advertisement. I could only dream….

Echoes from the Dark Ocean – by Jeremiah R

So happy I can finally share this work with you!
This label design I made for Jeremiah R’s record Echoes from the Dark Ocean,
Distant Wave Record.

The font is made with an old (half working) Olivetti typewriter and in the computer.
The jellyfish pictures are JR’s own, which I edited by hand and the computer.

Intergalantic Worms – the series

Back from holiday! And time to share my last project with you:
Right before my holiday Uppercase Magazine called for submissions for it’s new Surface Pattern Design Guide Vol. 2 book! During the online course, by Lilla Rogers, I already created a pattern design for the cover of this book, as an assignment and contest in cooperation with Uppercase Magazine.

This design I used as my first in a series of repeat patterns to submit. The next five images I created in a very simplistic and analog way, as seen in Julia Rothmans Skillshare class. (Draw on a square paper in the middle to the edges, cut the paper in four, tape them together again in some kind of cross-way, so that the undrawn edges become the middle, and finish/fill up the rest of the paper and colour.)

Served In Cold Blood

MF-incoldblood-plates

The result of my second assignment from the course Make Art That Sells, by Lilla Rogers.
Description: be inspired by Staffordshire pottery and create plates for the Home Decor market.

When I read about Staffordshire pottery I got interested by the fact they also used to make pottery of talk-of-the-town news, like elections, celebrities, family dramas, murder cases…
With the last one I instantly thought of the book ‘In Cold Blood’, by Truman Capote, and the movie ‘Capote’, played by Philip Seymour Hoffmann.
Since I was fascinated by the murder story, the book, Capote as a person and the actor Seymour Hoffman, I decided to turn these plates into an ode to them.

For this piece I used acrylics and gouache.
The newspaper is the Volkskrant which I photographed at home.

If you like you can check out this gallery to see the work of my fellow ‘students’.
