Rotterdams Open Doek Filmfestival – There were only winners…

MF-ROD-LV-filmfestival-presentation

In May 2017 a season of short films ended with the Rotterdams Open Doek Filmfestival, as every year, hosted by Lantaren Venster in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. I was asked to illustrate Rotterdams skyline, combined with their logo. This was printed on the CREWs T-shirt and on another bunch for merchandise purpose that night.

The above picture I did just for fun for my portfolio. I got a bit carried away….
Below is the print on the chest and (official logo on the) sleeve.

STEM JIJ OOK? ik dacht al dat ik het rook.

MF-finderskeepersMF-1-original

A while ago I had an idea to get rid of all the second hand frames I have in my studio-at-home, combining it with “putting my work out there” off the screen.
The idea was to make little illustrations of whatever comes to mind (read: original artwork, not tweaked in the computer), frame it, and leave it somewhere in the streets of Rotterdam for someone to find under the name (and hashtag) Finders Keepers MF.
Or….some extra filling for the community garbage cans….(fingers crossed it won’t be the last. )

Yesterday, when having a shower (ideas pop up in showers, you know that), I thought of my somewhat “election stress” for the upcoming Dutch election Wednesday the 15th of March….and for whatever reason I thought of a song a teacher of mine sung when we had to walk back for thousands of hours (1h or so) to our dorms after a long day during our exchange in Germany (I was 14 years old).

She sang (with a conspiracy voice to each of us…):

Zweet jij ook?
Ik dacht al dat ik het rook.
Ik vraag je heel vertrouwelijk
Zweet jij ook?

(and we had to shout back…of course we did…):
JA, IK ZWEET!
VAN M’N OKSELS TOT M’N REET!
IK ZEG JE HEEL VERTROUWELIJK
JA, IK ZWEET!

Free translation (unfortunately not rhyme):
Do you sweat?
I already thought I’d smell it
I’m asking you very confidentially
Do you sweat?

YES, I SWEAT!
FROM MY ARM PITS TO MY ASS!
I TELL YOU VERY CONFIDENTIALLY
YES I SWEAT!

Well, this has always stayed with me as you can imagine, and just pops up in my head from time to time. This time, in the shower, I somehow made it into this:

Stem jij ook?
Ik dacht al dat ik het rook.
etc.

Free translation:
Do you vote?
I already thought I’d smell it.
etc.

The song kept in my head, I thought of the framed illustration idea again, I thought of March 15, and the combination was made.

Hopefully if someone finds it and decides to keep it and unwrap they will share it on social media with  #finderskeepersMF @madamefourmilion. Won’t that be cool? Free gift versus free advertisement. I could only dream….

Luckily there was no one paying attention to me at 8 a.m. this morning…

Yesterday was a energizing day full of ‘social business’!

In the morning I went to Republic Moto Rotterdam. A lifestyle shop around motorcycles; high end accessories and (fashionable) protective clothing will be sold, a cafe and restaurant will stay open after shop’s opening hours and they’ve also big motor-related event plans. OPENING January 2017!

Together with a few other artists, illustrators, graphic designers I’ll be showing my work in their shop through a customized helmet. Their customers will be able to get in touch with us if they like our artwork on helmets, motor parts, accessories, or anything else.

I’m very grateful for this opportunity, given by the store owners Egbert Egberts and Jürgen van Son. And of course my colleague Arthur Spek for letting me customize his cafe racer helmet, where it all started…

Savoy Room (jazz band from The Netherlands) returns to the studio to make new music!
They’ll be working on new songs, gigs and eventually a brand new album.

I’ll be supporting them again with new artwork.
More about that when there’s something to share!
